Circular - To the Clergy and Laity of the Diocese of Sydney

Addresses the secession of two clergymen to the Roman Catholic Church, one of whom was W.H. Walsh, Rector of Christ Church, St Laurence. Includes the text of letters to the Sydney Morning Herald from both Walsh and Broughton. This copy is addressed by hand from Broughton to W.M. Cowper at Stroud.

Cover letter from Broughton to the Archbishop of Canterbury, John Bird Sumner, on the question of the Roman Catholic Church's jurisdiction. Text of meeting minute 12th March 1851, Sydney Diocesan Committee for the Societies for Promoting Christian Knowledge and the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, expressing opposition to the Roman Catholic Church dividing England into ecclesiastical sees. Reinstates Broughton's assertion that the Bishop of Rome has no authority in the Diocese of Australia.
